The Attack On Titan Tribute Game - Even for those not into the series

Developer: Feng Li

Format: PC (Browser/Unity)

Attack on Titan is extremely popular at this point, so it was only a matter of time before a game based in its world was made. This particular game however, was fan-made, and a dang good one at that. It's a free browser game running on Unity 3D, and definitely has that fan-made feeling about it, but don't let that notion dissuade you from the assurance of it's quality. Even if you aren't a fan of the show (like myself) you can still find enjoyment in it.

The main goal of the game can vary from game mode to game mode, but it almost always involves killing titans of varying sizes. To kill a titan you have to get to and slice the back of it's neck, and depending on (I'm assuming) how much force you hit it's weakness with determines the points you get per kill. All titans aside from bosses have this same weakness, but there are different types of titans, so don't expect to deal with all of them the same way.

The mechanics are solid, albeit a bit complex. With most characters traditional running and jumping is slow enough so that you're almost always using the 3D Maneuver Gear. Using can definitely take some getting used to, but once using the 3D Gear is adjusted to it can be smooth sailing. You are somewhat limited in what you can do, as your blades break and you can run out of gas. Doing things like shooting out the ropes and boosting around cost gas, and you'll eventually either refill it or run out and have to run on foot to the refill station. Not as easy as it sounds.

With the mechanic as complex as they are, the button-map isn't too convoluted, but just in case there are some weird button-mapping issues you don't have to worry too much, because the menu for fixing that is simple and easy.

This game is convenient to pick up and play with friends. As a matter of fact that's this game's primary appeal: playing with friends. It is possible to play alone, but it mostly just feels like practice instead of actually playing. Playing with friends is more fun because of the sense of security when you and your squad roll out. They can save you from being eaten, send up different flares to show location, and all sorts of other things. The titans have decent AI, but the humans have none, meaning that if you have no-one to play with, you're playing alone.

The art-style are nothing to write home about, and are really what makes the game as a whole have that whole fan-made feeling. The art is somewhat cell-shaded when it comes to the character models, which looks nice enough. Even the low resolution of the houses, trees, and ground is pretty excusable, considering how much you're going to be moving around. What's kinda weird to look at is the randomly generated faces on the titans. It used to be just a blonde or black hair titan, but how it can have almost any hair style or facial setup. It can be a little off-putting.

Atmosphere is strong with this game. The music is nonexistent, but the sound effects are satisfying enough to make up for it. Hearing a titan's foot steps behind you while you're on the ground is terrifying. That is how the game is atmospheric: terror. If you run out of gas, it's a whole new game for you. You've gotta run to the gas refill without getting eaten, which can be very hard considering the difference in size between the player character and a titan. Even frantically grappling around places while taking on a titan can be nerve racking.

This game is a work in progress, and will only get better. New stages, game modes, titan types, and other pieces of content will be added as time goes on. It's got good appeal to people who like or dislike the show. It's worth the play once you're past the initial learning curve, so just grab some friends and jump right in!
