The I Saw Her series is one I have a soft spot for. It's simplicity, elegance, and charm is one I just can help but adore somewhere in my being. I Saw Her Standing There is a platformer with a good mix of both puzzle and skill elements, with the prime concept is that your girlfriend is a zombie who you have to lead into a cage. It's a very simple game with a simple narrative to boot.
Throughout the game you sorta escort your girlfriend across each single-screen level into a cage, as she follows you once you get near her. If you get too close, however, she will knock you over, making you restart the level. The same could be said about any of the other zombies that are introduced. The platforming itself is fun. You jump high and run fast. This is a great balance, as you can run faster than all the zombies but also out of the range where your girlfriend will follow you. She will run faster than other zombies, so it's a neat mix. You can also unlock a gun to kill other zombies, but it requires you get to it each level.
Extra mechanics would be cheats you unlock after beating the game. You have things like the "perma-gun" and "crazy super gun" to make it easy, "xtreme mode" and "jumpin' zombies" to make it hard, and "flying movement" and "big head mode". They're pretty self-explanatory for the most part. They can each be toggled individually and can add a new flavor to the game as well as some replay ability.
The narrative is two very simple sentences that appear once you start a level and once you complete it. It's just simple descriptions giving character to the girlfriend and details the relation ship between her and the main character, as well as how other zombies feel about it. The game is very short, consisting of only 3 Acts with 5 stages in each act. I guess that would make 30 sentences total. It's a decent progression rate for a charming little narrative.
You want to talk minimalist aesthetics? This game does it very well. Very basic shapes like rectangles and circles make up everything from the cage to the people to the platforms. The zombies and player character are a simple lower-case i, just colored differently. The colors are solid and popping, but fluid animations are what tie it all up though. The music, while repeating itself a little too often, is a pleasant acoustic arrangement that is quite fitting throughout the entire game.
I'd suggest giving this game a little play, at least so you can see why I have this soft-spot for it. It's just so pleasant, you know? Anyways, this series is a trilogy, so I might as well review the entire series!
