Alright, so gee whilikers with this game. The Power is a free, "metroidvania" game that is pretty easily summed up as "the flash game Metroid". You're a bounty hunter on a foreign planet, wrecking what shop you can with your pitiful blaster. You soon learn about The Power, a mysterious force that can be amazing in one person's hands, but disastrous in another's. So you explore, gain items and upgrades, and learn more about The Power.

The upgrades are pretty standard Metroid upgrades. You have the Blaster Upgrade, which increases both the damage and the firing rate considerably. Theres the mines, which are infinite but are mostly used to destroy certain blocks. The missiles can destroy even more blocks, but run on ammo. Super Missiles eventually replace normal missiles, and are stronger, destroy more blocks, and run on the same ammo. The hookshot is always shot straight up, to either pull yourself upwards or to attack an enemy. You have two suit upgrades: One that makes you immune to harsh weather/climates, and then the one allowing you to move normally underwater. Sound familiar yet? You then have the collectable upgrades, which are scattered across the world. There are two types of these upgrades: The Health Upgrades, and the Missile Upgrades. The Heath Upgrades give a permanent +20 health to you, and the Missile Upgrades give +4 capacity to your missile cache.

Now the game focuses on single screen platforming as well as some 2D shooting action. The platforming is decently nice, definitely part in the game. You can only shoot to the side, like in MegaMan, which adds a neat layer of simplicity to the game. The hookshot, which shoots straight up, is really fun to use against enemies higher than you, which throws some tactics into the mix. Exploring is really fun, with many different types of enemies and environments. You also come across Collectable Upgrades you cannot get at first, but after getting an item or two, you can come all the way back to get it.

Lemme just get the blemishes of this game out of the way. First off, there is a knock back effect almost like the one in Castlevania, in how it can be a pain in the ass. When you get hit by anything, you are knocked back a little bit. Just imagine this happening in mid-jump. It is infuriating. Another thing is simply technical, but it still is a problem. The game can usually have too many things on the screen, making the game periodically slow down and go back to normal. This is very disorienting, making platforming and general playing of the game hard. The last thing would be the bosses. They are all hard. Some lack a close by checkpoint, others are full of crap everywhere, and some are decently poor in design. They could have been really good, but sadly were not.

Now the art style is a neat, conservative, neon-based style. Its nice to look at without bombarding your eyes with too much flashiness. Some areas, such as the snow one, have real nice effects to them, making them look a bit atmospheric(though this is a thing that slows down the game). It is simple, clean, and works great. The piece of music is decent, fitting the area that is is played.

So there you have it folks, The Power. It is a very good game, one of the best I have played in a long while. Honestly, just play Passion for Exploring (from the game VVVVVV) while playing the game, and Positive Force (also from VVVVVV) during the bosses, then the game is really fun. If you like Metroid, or just wanna play a fun(and free) game, then give The Power a shot.

I do lots of writing, but also dabble in videos.

I write about whatever I want, but it's mostly games.

Also, excellent taste in VGM.
