Give Up: A Game About Failure And Regret

Developer: Jmtb02

Publisher: Armor Games

Format: PC (Browser/Adobe Flash)

Give Up is a lot like Exit Path, in mainly looks an controls, mostly looks. You're traversing throughout single-screen stages that progressively gets harder by adding (or taking away) obstacles or platforms with each new stage. Now when I say harder, I'd say it's pretty outright with it's difficulty. The difficulty curve can get to a point at times where you don't even feel satisfied that you beat a hard level, but because you finally get to play a new stage. You'll rack up quite a few deaths, but mostly because of spikes right under the spawn point.

At the bottom of the screen there's your time played, number of deaths, and the giant "GIVE UP" button, which simply ends the game. The game knows what it is: A challenging platformer to make people get people frustrated. Thats why it collects and displays all that data. It know's you're gonna end up being curious as to how long you've been playing, or how many deaths you've racked up, so it has it there for you. Just so you're not left wondering, you know?

The platforming is really standard, but also really good. It's easy to get accustomed to the momentum and the double-jump is easy to implement into how you move around obstacles. Speaking of obstacles, there are lots of them. Not only is there lots of variety, but lots of everything as well. There are spikes, buzz-saws going back and forth, laser beams, cannons, and usually plenty of space for those last two to shoot at you. There are even things like falling platforms and invisible ones to keep you on your toes. Each of these things are implemented in the game as you progress further into the game, helping to make the difficulty curve a bit better.

The art is a sleek, simple design, which is easy on the eyes. When I said earlier that it was like Exit Path in terms of looks, I mean it looks like it's just retextured graphics from Exit Path. It's very simple, which is balanced by the complexity of all the things going on at once.

Over all, really fun game for any platformer gamers out there, especially for those who liked Exit Path. It's a challenging play though, I gotta warn you on that front. It's a well put-together platformer that not only played really well but had a really neat look to it.

Oh, and don't be shy when pushing the "GIVE UP" button, it's quite funny to do.
