This is different than what I usually review. Instead of a happy, fun loving game, we've got a horror rich zombie apocalypse RPG. Unlike its predecessors(one and two), The Last Stand: Union City is a 2-D side scrolling adventure, where you're trying to find your wife. You go through many different parts of the city, exploring the ruins of humanity. Its crazy, listening to what the survivors have to say, kinda saddening, even. This games like a 2-D Fallout, and works very similarly. You can collect all sorts of stuff: magazines, foods, medical supplies, guns, knives, clothing, and all that jazz.

There's many weapons. You've got guns, knives, axes, hammers, pipes, RPGs, assault rifles, katanas and a skill that applies to each of them. For melee skills theres blunt(pipes, hammers, nail boards, and so on) and blades(knives, axes, and swords). For guns theres pistols(self explanatory), long guns(shotguns and rifles), automatics(self explanatory), and finally, specials(launchers). A new item category this game adds is clothes. You've got shirts, shorts, jeans, suits, bio hazard gear, fedoras, and gasmasks. Its quite impressive.

Whats also impressive is the atmosphere. This game can really be scary. You really need some ammo, but you really don't wanna have to see how many zombies are in that building. Being outside is more safe than indoors, lemme tell ya. Theres one scary mechanic in this game, that'll make your lonely, playing games in the middle of the night with the light off just to make it scary so you can overreact on face cam, self to raise an entire inch from all the crap you'll produce. This might happen outdoors, but trust me when I say this, its a ton worse indoors. Well, lets do this. Well you're just exploring a hospital or something, getting lost and what not. Then suddenly, you hear this crazy music out of nowhere, followed by metal or rock or something. Suddenly the ceiling caves in, followed by tons of zombies, they all land right on your companion and instantly incapacitate him. You're all like "Forget this" and leave the room. Its no use, the ceiling falls in that room as well, and you are forced to fight zombie after zombie, until they're finally all gone and done. You regain your senses, and all battered and bloody you say "What the heck just happened?"

The next best improvement is the addition of NPCs (non playable characters). Most of them just talk to you, some give you quests, and others either hate you or are actually cool! First come the enemies. There's normal ones, die pretty easily. Then the fat ones, a little tougher. Then some begin to use weapons(no guns). There's dog zombies and crawling half zombies, both of which you'll have to crouch to hit. Then. Introduced in the last stage, are the police and army zombies. They have armor and riot shields! Its retarded how long they take to kill. At least they give you the RPG at that level, but still. Another enemy at one point are the police, or HERM or something. Well, they don't last long, but are the only enemies with guns, so mentionable.

Now on to NPCs that stand out. Theres obviously your wife, who follows you from when you save her to I guess the end of the game. Who could forget Barry, the guy who helps you save your wife from HERM. Next is the guy at the pawn shop, who calls himself the King. He just sells you stuff, cash only baby. Then theres Jack, the main protagonist in the first two Last Stand games. Its just nice to see a familiar face, thats all. Next is the companions: Kelly and Hank. To get Kelly you've gotta give her the glasses on the floor right next to the room she's in. She starts with a knife but you can give her a gun. Moving on to Hank, he works at an Arms dealership, and got robbed and stuff. He says he wont leave until you get his papa's rifle and bolt for him. Once you do, he uses it to fight for you. These companions can get incapacitated and die, so you might wanna protect 'em.

This is a really fun game, plenty of replay-ability and playing time. Its got tons of customization and exploration. So go play the game, its free after all! And if you want, play the two before it!
