My Thoughts and Feelings on The First Season of Attack on Titan

Alright, so I just got around to watching the ever-so-popular Attack on Titan, and I'll admit, it competes with Cowboy Bebop as one of the most overrated shows I have ever watched. Yeah , yeah, its not too bad of a show, just not nearly as good as people praise it. Its only on season 1, and I don't know how season 2 is gonna be, so I'm just going to go over the goods and the bads of Attack on Titan's Season One.

*SPOILER ALERT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED*

Lets start with the goods(and then later drop the hammer on this show). A unique story gives some points, I like the whole Titans pushing the humans to the brink of extinction, with the humans being in the walls and all that. I like the twist of Eren being a titan. I like the 3d Maneuver Gear, the weapons, and the whole military thing the series has going on. Its got good animation, although a few bits were a bit overdone, and the music isn't half bad.

Now for a few problems with the series. Just to start things off, the character development is terrible. Nearly nothing is known about anyone other than maybe Annie Mikasa, Eren, and Armin, and not much is really known about Armin. Most people just have names and faces, and then no further character development. Most characters you can recognize by name or face, but thats all there is to know. This breaks most of our attachment to the characters, destroying most of the emotional aspect attached to them. This is the prime reason Marco's death meant almost nothing to me. I say almost because I at least acknowledged it.

The series is also pretty repetitive. Literally, its people getting slaughtered with the occasional why-didn't-I-do-something moment a character has. People are slaughtered in the forest, people are slaughtered in the towns, people are slaughtered in the towns again, people are slaughtered in the fields, more people slaughtered in the towns. Its not tragic after a while, and its all the same thing of a titan eating another unrecognizable person. There are few moments where this trend is broken, like when Captain Levi FINALY fights, or the first time Eren became a titan.

The titans. Now I'm not saying they're bad, just disappointing. They're all the same slow, lumbering, strong idiots who somehow SLAUGHTER the much more agile and smart humans. They just walk and eat, just as boring as zombies, except zombies at least bite at your throat or something, instead of just eating you whole. The only interesting titans showed up only a few times in the series, leaving most of it uninteresting. You have the super-dee-duper popular colossal titan, who showed up twice. While he was cool as jack in his first appearance, his second was down-right stupid. He showed up for about a second, and then left. This entire appearance was out of the blue, over as fast as it started, and was pointless. Then there was the Armored Titan, for one appearance, with the whole destroying a wall scene. That was badass. He seemed like the coolest titan, and never showed up again. Sad, really. The Female Titan by far played the biggest role aside from Eren. She showed up, wrecked shop, was discovered, and was defeated. Honestly, the most developed titan. Then there was Eren, and his was pretty plain, but probably played the biggest part in the series.

Continuing with titans. We know nearly nothing of them. We don't know where we came from, what their purpose is, why can they regenerate and why they don't have to have food, why they only care about killing humans, and all sorts of other stuff about them. We also know nothing about Eren's ability, and how he got it. All we got was a series of flashbacks. You can decipher it and all, but was no one in the series curious as to how he could do it. Then theres that stupid scene where Eren attacked Mikasa. He had a goal: Pick up the rock and seal the gate. Why did he instantly swing at Mikasa then?! That was stupid! In the end, we know nothing of titans other than a few details that don't really provide any satisfaction.

I don't feel like going any further. Looking back at it, I'm starting to like the show less and less. I dunno if its bad, but most certainly not great. We know almost nothing about anything, so nearly no progress was made. What did season one do? Show us what things are. Whether its the setting, the titans, the 3D Maneuver Gear, to whatever. It only showed us that those things are in that world. Nothing else about them. Super overrated, and could've been a great show, and hopefully season two will make it that way. Season 1 wasn't that good. Severely overrated.

Aww Yeah!

I do lots of writing, but also dabble in videos.

I write about whatever I want, but it's mostly games.

Also, excellent taste in VGM.
